Forward leads - leads drill 1

Wednesday, November 29th, 2006

1
Players line up as in the diagram, all balls at the baseline lines.

Each player does a series of 5 forward leads:
1) V-Cut Slash-and-Seal
2) V-Cut 10-Fingers-Under-the-Basket
3) Triangle Cut
4) Triangle into Flare Cut from the elbow
5) Back Cut

2
Cut #1 - Slash-and-Seal
3 passes the ball to 1 using a baseball pass (in-bounding practise).
3 moves into the key, pivots on outside foot and bring inside foot and arm over. Inside arm “slashes” over the top of opponents arm, inside foot steps across to “seal” opponent.
3 then cuts hard to the free-throw line extended for return pass from 1.
3 then catches the ball using his target hand, pivots to square-up to the basket and executes a shot-fake.

3
Coaching points for 3
Medium speed into the key, full-speed cut to the ball (change-of-direction = change-of-pace)
Give outside hand as target hand.
Catch, Square-Up and Shot-Fake (CSUSF) off the inside foot first. After the players have mastered pivoting on the inside foot, introduce the outside foot as pivot.

Coaching points for 1
On every pass from 3:
- 1 executes a Replace-Yourself Cut (go away, come back).
- 1 does a CSUSF
On every pass to 3:
- pass with the outside hand (one-hand push pass)
- pass to 3’s target hand (away from the defense)

4
N.B. about inside/outside foot
Inside foot relates to the foot closest to the center/split line (shown as line down the middle of the court) AFTER the post-up slash-and-seal move and AT THE MOMENT THE BALL IS CAUGHT on the perimeter. On the perimeter, using the inside foot as a pivot foot once you’ve squared-up to the basket (now the foot closest to the baseline), will enable you to do on-side dribble moves into the middle.

N.B. about shot-fakes
We like to tell our players that a shot-fake is just a shot that is not taken. Here are three key points for a well executed shot-fake:
1) Bring the ball up to your forehead.
2) Look AT THE BASKET from under the ball.
3) Keep your knees bent. Only the upper-body moves. We keep the lower body in a ready position to drive past the defender if he “takes the fake”.

Circle the Wagon

Thursday, November 23rd, 2006

1
Circle the Wagon

Emphasize is on boxing out and communication.

Players 1,2,3 and 4 are on defense.
Players 5,6,7 and 8 are on offense.

The coach calls “kick” and the defensive players slide in anti clockwise direction, calling out the names of the offensive players as they pass them.

2
After a 5-10 second period, the coach shoots the ball, and the offensive players crash the boards.

Defensive players must box out and come up with the rebound. If the ball is rebounded by the offense, play 4 on 4 till a stop or a score.

The defense must get three stops in a row.

Variation:
You can also go into 4 on 4 transition to the other end of the court and back on a score or on a stop.

Circle boxout

Thursday, November 23rd, 2006

1
4 players do slides around the free throw circle.

Coach is standing with the ball.

2
When the coach shoots, the players below the foul line have to box out the players above the foul line.

1:1 Blocking out

Thursday, November 23rd, 2006

1
Divide your team in a number of groups - two groups for one basket.

Shooters have the ball. Rebounders receive a ball after V-cut in-out!

2
He goes for the jump shot and shoots to the basket.

Shooter rebounds his own shot and makes an escape dribble to the active side.

3
He passes to the shooter.

4
The rebounder is now the defensive player and correctly closes out toward the shooter with the ball.

Attacker shoots to the basket.

5
Defender blocking out properly.

6
Both players go to the rebound.

If attacker rebounds his own shot, he is allowed for one more shot.
The game is finished when the defender catches the ball.

7
Players switch groups.

Important!

Teach aggressive and proper boxing out!
Demonstrate both principles of blocking out!
Balance, judgement and timing!

In the beginning allow defenders to blocking out properly by penalizing attackers:
After the shot attacker must count to TWO then he is allowed to go for offensive rebound. This will give the defender enough time to concentrate on proper blocking-out!

When defenders become more successful, then this drill must be executed like in a real game!

Create own rules of playing 1:1 then block out! - Attacker shot on the spot, after 1,2… dribbles, etc…

1 on 1 reaction drill

Thursday, November 23rd, 2006

1
Players 1 and 2 start on the low block with their back to the coach.

When the coach calls out a player’s name, both players pivot with the player whose name was called being on offense.

The objective is for both players to react quickly to get a score or a defensive stop.

10-10-10 part 1

Monday, November 20th, 2006

1
1 is the shooter
2 and 3 the “passers”
4 and 5 the rebounders

2 throws the ball of the backboard and 1 rebounds the ball going straight back up and scoring.

2
5 steps in and rebounds the shot.

3
5 passes back out to 2 as 1 moves across lane to do the same from the left side.

4
3 now throws the ball off the backboard, and again 1 rebounds going straight back up to score.

5
4 steps in to rebound.

6
4 passes out to 3 and 1 crosses lane back to right side.

7
This continues until 1 has either shot 10 times or made 10 buckets, depending on how you want the drill run.

Rotation is clockwise.
