Gonzaga flex entry

Wednesday, November 29th, 2006

“Gonzaga” Flex entry.

Start in “3-out” set with 5 and 4 in the wing spots.

Ball handler (1) drives hard to one side of the floor to initiate movement.

5 sets a down screen to release 2 for a wing entry pass, then flares out to the corner.

On the weak side, 4 screens down for 3 who executes a curl cut to the opposite side of the lane.

3 becomes a primary scoring option.

As soon as 3 has cleared the screen, 1 down screens for 4 to pop to the weak side elbow.

Immediately after screening, 1 “spins and pins” looking for a through-the-lane feed. If he doesn’t get the ball, 1 flares out to weak side corner.

If 2 passes to 4 at the wing, the normal flex motion is initiated.

11 man fast break 2

Wednesday, November 29th, 2006

11 Man Fast break

Drill starts with 3 players at center court 2 players at each basket playing defense in tandem and 4 players off the court at the foul line extended on each side of floor.

The drill starts as a 3 on 2 fast break. The man with the ball stop hops at foul line then slides to whichever side the ball is passed for a return pass and possible shot. The back defensive man stops man that receives pass. The top defensive man forces man with ball to give up the dribble then falls back to prevent cross lane pass. The object of the defense is to create the turnover or force the shot from outside.

After the shot has been taken the rebounder passes the ball to one of the players at foul line extended and follows the pass to fill the lane. The receiver takes the ball to the middle of the floor to start the fast break going to the other end of the floor

The object of the drill is to teach passing, ball handling, defense as well as conditioning.

Adjust the drill to the way your break is played.

Full court 1 on 1

Wednesday, November 29th, 2006

1
Minimum 8 players and two basketballs

Players line up in the corners of the court. The players first in line must be ready to execute the play.

1 and 2 have the ball and run to the center of the court (as shown on map) when the coach gives the signal.
Simultaneously 3 and 4 run to the center of the court.

2
1 and 2 put the ball on the line (no passing!!!) so that 3 and 4 can pick up the ball.

3
3 and 4 dribble as fast as they can to the hoop and try to score.
1 and 2 are defending.

Play until they score. Defender takes the rebound and gives it to the next team-mate in the corner.

You can motivate the players with the following: when an offensive rebound is taken the defender must make 5 or 10 push-ups.

Make sure that the players go to the maximum by motivating them. Coaching is very important…keep them motivated!

1 on 1 sprint & post up

Wednesday, November 29th, 2006

1Coach calls “go” and both players sprint, touch the baseline and sprint back. The first player to pick the ball up out of the chair is on offense while the other player is on defense.

The offensive player should look to make a post move.

Variation:
Change the position of the chair and ball.

Big man high low 3 on 1

Wednesday, November 29th, 2006

1
4 Players
1 Ball

Situation:
Defender 5 is overplaying the low post. No pass possible.

Player 4 goes to the high post to start the high low.

2
Player 1 passes to player 4.

The moment player 1 passes player 5 starts to move.

Depending on his position and his defenders’ position, he either bumps his defender and steps inside asking the ball with his left hand.

Or player 5 turns puts his right leg behind the defender and gets the ball in his left hand and scores.

1
Cut #5 - Back cut

After the Catch, Square-Up and Shot-Fake (CSUSF) from the previous sequence, 3 passes back to 1 and cuts directly to the wing. 3 must get both feet over the three-point line. Then 3 must do a catch fake to encourage the defence to over extend toward the ball, and then cut hard back to the basket for the lay-up pass from 1.
5 then passes to 1 and starts his series of 5 cuts.
You can work out your own rotation system. I generally leave 1 and 2 in place for two or three goes, and then let them call somebody else up to the guard spot.

2
Coaching Points for 3
NEVER FAKE A BACKCUT!
The key as to when to back cut is when the defense is over the 3-point line.
Offense must get both feet over the 3-point line before back cutting.

Coaching Points for 1
Use a pass fake when you want your receiver to back-cut to further encourage the defense to over extend toward the ball.

1
Cut #4 - Flare Cut from Elbow

After the Catch, Square-Up and Shot-Fake (CSUSF) from the previous sequence, 3 passes back to 1 and cuts to the low-block, leads to elbow then back-peddles (flares) towards the short-corner where he receives a pass back from 1. He catches the ball in the air and comes down already squared-up on two feet and does a shot-fake.

When 3 passes to 1, 1 should have just completed a Replace-Yourself cut and CSUSF.
After 1 passes to 3, 1 executes a Replace-Yourself cut.
1’s pass can be a two-handed overhead pass.

2
Coaching Points for 3
When running backwards or back-peddling, have your knees bent and have your head over the center over your body for balance.
Use, “You’re in the air, ball’s in the air!” or
“Catch the all in the air!” as a catch-cry.
Land on two feet, balanced and low.

Cut #3 - Triangle Cut
After the Catch, Square-Up and Shot-Fake (CSUSF) from the previous sequence, 3 passes back to 1 and cuts to the low-block, leads to elbow, then out to the wing again where he receives a pass back from 1. He does CSUSF.

When 3 passes to 1, 1 should have just completed a Replace-Yourself cut and CSUSF.
After 1 passes to 3, 1 executes a Replace-Yourself cut.

Coaching points for 3
When squaring-up on the inside foot (See NB of #1) with a triangle cut, use a reverse pivot RIPPING the ball through past the defender to the hip, knocking the defenders hands away with your “ripping” elbow.

Cut #2 - V-Cut 10-Fingers-Under-The-Basket

After the Catch, Square-Up and Shot-Fake (CSUSF) from the previous sequence, 3 passes back to 1. The pass back to 1 is with the outside hand (one-hand push pass).
3 moves into the key and puts both hands up (10 fingers) as a catch fake directly under the basket.
3 then cuts hard (again, change-of-direction=change-of-pace) back out to the wing position (free-throw line extended to the 3 point line) where he receives a pass back from 1. He does CSUSF.

After 1 passes to 3, 1 executes a Replace-Yourself cut.
